Saturday Sketch Challenge

Hello Friends,

Happy Saturday! Time for another Sketch Challenge :)  Here is the sketch we were given to work with.

Yesterday, I had a colonoscopy.  When the nurse came to the waiting room and called my name.  She said to me "Now where do I know you from?" I honestly didn't know. She then said "I know!  I came with Gwen to your card class.  I remembered 'Julie' right away :) Gwen is a co-worker and I invited her to a class and encouraged her to bring a friend.
GREAT NEWS : I am cancer free.  This was such a relief.  I got to thinking how I wish my dear Father could have had the same outcome, but then I was re-assured that I will indeed see him again.  This thought was my inspiration for the card I would like to share with you today.

I tweaked it just a little. I have never ever used Whisper White Card Stock without additional colors.  I like the crispness of this card and felt it didn't need any other color.  The Crushed Curry Ribbon and the daffodils are sufficient.  I used the Old Olive and the Crushed Curry Stampin' Write Markers.  To give it the background I was wanting, I used the Perfect Polka Dots Embossing Folder.

This beautiful set (Abundant Hope) offers inspiration and hope with a spiritual Easter message. Available in both wood-mount and clear-mount.

Have a wonderful weekend!

LOVE Jumbo Wheel

Hello Friends,

I am sure you know by now that my all time favorite Stampin' Up! color is 'Chocolate Chip'.  I haven't used Bermuda Bay all that much, which is one of this years In Colors.

Susan Adams created this card and at our retreat this past weekend, Cindy Petersen made us this card.  The fabulous thing about this kind of retreat, is we all take various ideas with us and make what we want for as many people who are there.  In this case, there were 6 of us. This means we come home with so many wonderful ideas.  It is so exciting.

I LOVE Jumbo Wheels.  You can create so many cards in such a short time using them.  This wheel was inked up in Chocolate Chip CRAFT.  Simply roll the wheel across the ink pad and then across the cardstock.  Pour Clear Embossing Powder over the ink and use the heat tool to set.  The cute heart is one of our Embosslit Dies.  The 'Direct to paper' technique was used on the edges of the Card Stock.  The ribbon is the reverse of the Bermuda Bay polka dot ribbon.

I think this is a very stylish card and definitely one that can be made quickly. I love the color combination......imagine it in Chocolate Chip and Pretty in Pink, Basic Black and Melon Mambo.  The Happy Anniversary sentiment is from the    Stamp Set.  Obviously you could use other sentiments for that perfect occasion.

■ Designed to cut through one sheet of paper or card stock at a time

■ Use with Sizzix Big Shot machine, standard cutting pads, and multipurpose platform

■ Die size: 2-1/4" x 2-1/2"

Quilts, Sewing and the Big Shot

Hello Friends,

Last night I went to eat dinner with a fabulous friend!  I met this friend at the beginning of my Stampin' Up! days and I knew then I had met a lifelong friend.  We both love to stamp, shop, eat, be pampered and chat.

Today I have to starve myself ready for my colonoscopy on Friday and last night I really felt like ordering 'all the menu'.  I don't do good without food for long periods of time.  So as you eat today, think of me eating my lovely chicken broth :)))

Do you sew?  Do you make quilts?  If so, this will really interest you!  If you don't, this may still interest you!

•Sizzix Big Shot

•5-Point 3D Star Bigz die

•Scallop Circle #2 Bigz die

•Background fabric (two 10" x 10" squares)

•10" x 10" square 100% cotton batting

•Ric-rac (6")

•Sewing machine and thread

Instructions

1.Die cut four pieces of fabric using Big Shot and 5-Point 3D Star Bigz die. Round off hard edges.

2.Die cut two large scallop circles using Big Shot and Scallop Circle #2 Bigz die.

3.Die cut one small scallop circle using Big Shot and Scallop Circle #2 Bigz die.

4.Insert cotton batting between two squares of background fabric and sew together using sewing machine and thread.

5.Sew four flower petals (from 5-Point 3D Star Bigz die) to square. Fold large scallop circle in half and adhere to bottom of flower petals.

6.Fold small scallop circle in half, then fold over part way to create one gather. Adhere to bottom of flower using sewing machine and thread.

7.Adhere ric-rac stem to square using sewing machine and thread.

8.Create leaf by cutting large scallop circle in half, then folding inner edge, and sewing each half on square.

9.Wash and dry to give shabby-chic look.

Fabric Toolkit Q&A

Crafting with fabric is one of the biggest industry trends right now, and we aren't just talking quilts! You can create beautiful fabric accessories and home décor with your Big Shot--even if you don't sew. The Sizzix Big Shot makes it easy to cut intricate fabric shapes to use in all your crafting projects. To help you get started, here are some basic questions and answers about using the Big Shot to create with fabric.

What type of fabric will the Big Shot cut? The Big Shot will cut all types of fabric.

How many pieces of fabric can I cut at a time? That depends on the fabric. Different fabrics vary in thickness. For example, your Big Shot can cut through eight layers of cotton, which is a relatively thin fabric, but it will only cut through one layer of faux fur, which is a very thick fabric.

Do you shim fabric in a Big Shot differently than paper? No. Your Big Shot works the same with fabric as it does with paper. Different fabrics vary in thickness, much the same as different paper materials vary in thickness. If you are only cutting one layer of a very thin fabric, you might need to use a piece of card stock as a shim just as you would if you were only cutting one layer of thin paper.

Will all Big Shot dies cut fabric? You can cut fabric with any of the Sizzix steel-rule dies (Originals, Bigz, Bigz L, and Bigz XL). You cannot cut fabric with Sizzlits, Embosslits, Textured Impressions Embossing Folders, or Texturz Plates.

Will dies with score lines ruin my fabric? You can still use dies with score lines to cut fabric. The score lines will slightly distress your fabric, but shouldn't damage it permanently. However, we recommend that if you are using dies with score lines to only cut one or two layers at a time (depending on the thickness of your fabric). If you try to cut too many layers at a time, it is possible that the score lines could tear your fabric.

Will cutting fabric with the Big Shot dull my dies? The Big Shot steel-rule dies (Originals, Bigz, Bigz L, and Bigz XL) were designed to work on several different types of materials. Cutting fabric with your Big Shot dies will not result in any damage to your dies, and will not dull them any faster than cutting paper will.

Should I wash my fabric before working with it? It really depends on the fabric. Some lower-quality fabrics will shrink after they're washed, which could result in your project coming apart. However, many quilters don't wash their fabric first because the fabric is stiffer and easier to work with before it's washed. And if you use higher-quality fabrics, they will likely not shrink.

I don't have a sewing machine. Can I still create fabric projects? Yes! The world of fabric crafting is as varied as the world of paper crafting. There are several alternatives to using a sewing machine. You can create many simple designs sewing by hand using a needle and thread or even a hot glue gun. In addition, fusible web is a great option for creating one-of-a-kind fabric crafts.

What is fusible web, and how does it work? Fusible web is a manmade fiber that will melt when heated with an iron and become sticky. When it is placed between two pieces of fabric, the melting of the web causes the fabrics to fuse together making it possible for you to adhere the fabric without the use of a sewing machine. Fusible web is available in rolls (similar to tape), in pre-packaged pieces, or is sold by the yard in your local fabric store.

My quilting friends mention things called charm packs, layer cakes, and fat quarters. What are they? Charm packs, layer cakes, and fat quarters are terms for precut cotton that is generally used for quilting. Charm packs include a variety of coordinating fabrics cut into 5" x 5" squares. The packs have an assortment of patterned and solid fabrics, and their small size makes them ideal for using on quilt blocks. Layer cakes are just like charm packs, but they are larger in size, with the cotton cut into 10" x 10" squares. Fat quarters are pieces of cotton cut into quarter yard segments. However, instead of being cut vertically, like you would cut a piece of fabric off a bolt, fat quarters are cut horizontally first, giving you a piece of cotton that measures 18" X 22". All of these options are a great way to get a good selection of fabrics at a relatively inexpensive price.

If you love to sew and make quilts.....the Big Shot is a MUST HAVE.

A Treat made at our Stampin' Retreat

Hello Friends,

How was your weekend?  Mine was fabulous.  I stamped and stamped and stamped and stamped. It was 'stampin' heaven' :) I haven't been feeling well lately and this past weekend was exactly what I needed.  My friend, Cindy Petersen and I drove to New Harmony to spend the weekend with a few of our stampin' buddies.  I could write a whole post about the weekend itself but for now I must show you 'one of the many' projects we made.

This project inspired me.  It was a swap at Leadership. I cannot give credit to the creator as I don't know who made it . (If anyone knows who did make it, I would be happy to edit my post to give the due credit.

Tucked inside was a pack of Doublemint Gum.  I am not a pink and green kinda fan, especially 'brights'.  SO I wanted to re-create this using different colors.  I am really loving Stampin' Up!'s In Colors this year, so  I went with Rich Razzleberry, Crushed Curry, Melon Mambo and the ever favorite, Old Olive. I couldn't decide which to use, so I decided to use both - Rich Razzleberry and Crushed Curry 1/2" polka dot ribbon. Here is my re-creation.  One fabulous thing about getting together with stampin' buddies is leaning on their advice and ideas.  This was re-created using both mine and Cindy's 'minds'.

I love the rich, vibrant colors used here.  The "crimper" is a great tool and I don't remember the last time I used it BECAUSE I have been using the Big Shot every chance I can get.  The flowers were made using the "Flower Folds" die and the "Perfect Polka Dots Impressions folder". I also used the one of the hearts from the "Hearts Sizzlit 4-pack Dies"

The focal point of this cute project is the Designer Paper flower middle.  I learned so much this weekend but THIS was the highlight for me.  Quick, easy and fun.  I am going to get brave and make video tutorials on my blog but I have to get over the 'stage fright' first ;) So for now, I thought you might like the picture tutorial.

You will need to punch out 5 scallops using the Scallop Circle punch. I chose Melon Mambo from the "Razzleberry Lemonade Designer Series Paper."

Place the five punched scallop circles on top of each other and use the piercing tool to poke a hole through the center of all the circles.

Add a brad of your choice to the center.  I chose the rhinestone brads here.  (Note: You can use snail adhesive to attach the circles)

Begin by spritzing the first layer (of 5) with water and then folding and scrunching inwards.

Repeat the above step with all 5 pieces and this is what it will look like.
I made 6 extra ones

After a short while, I opened them up a little.

Now to me this seemed like a lot of work and was way too cute to simply add a pack of Doublemint Gum so I placed 4 of the flowers above into a "Small Flat Cellophane Bag" that I trimmed down and here is the finished project.

What a cute gift to give somebody.

Would you like the chance to win this cute gift?  Simply leave a comment to this post and let me know what you think. Do you have a question? Simply ask your question and you will also be entered into the drawing.  I will have a name drawn and will announce the winner on Friday.

Be sure to check back for some more wonderful projects we made at the retreat.

Have a wonderful day!

Utah Divas International - Saturday Sketch Challenge

Hello Friends,

Happy Saturday to you! Every Saturday morning, I love to check out what my fellow Diva Stampers have created for our UDI Sketch Challenge.  No doubt you will have visited Lorie's blog and WOW doesn't she have great ideas.

This was the sketch we were given for this week.

Now as I planned to be out of town this weekend, I KNEW I had to create something fast and have it ready to go.  So I created this card using Stampin' Up!'s fabulous new software - MY DIGITAL STUDIO.

This card literally took 5 minutes to create.  I started with 'Soft Suede' Card Stock as my base and then layered it with 'Very Vanilla'.  I added Brocade in Soft Suede and then added the same stamp using Pretty in Pink.  Using this stamp meant I didn't need to use any ribbon on my card.

I used a Punch and color filled it with Pretty in Pink and added the 'Always' stamp. I then finished the card by adding the 'Together Forever' sentiment stamp.
Very quick, very simple and very cute.

Have a fabulous weekend :)

Inspired by a photograph

Hello Friends,

One of the programs on our Utah Divas International NING group (for Stampin' Up! Demonstrators) is called 'Stampin' Sisters'.  My sister fpr the last round was the 'very creative' - Gretchen Barron from Decatur, IL.

Gretchen was inspired to make me a project from THIS picture.

Now, if you know me well, you will KNOW of my love for shoes.  My fabulous friend, Kimberly Van Diepen from Colorado Springs, CO is wowed by my shoes here and makes a point of them in this picture.

Basically, Gretchen read that post and was inspired to make me this fabulous gift JUST from looking at this picture.  NOW that truly is a work of art.

Get ready to say WOW :)

A beautiful box with the most beautiful cards

Close up view of the front of the box.  VERY detailed.  Does that not look like the pattern of my shoes?

Laurie's Stampin' Studio

Hello Friends,

I love organization.  I organize my stamp room over and over as I love to have everything organized and change is good, right?  I bought some fabulous storage supplies from IKEA and like to have everything sorted as if my room IS the store.  Pretty glass jars and everything neatly stacked in a row.

One of my very best friends Laurie (She will be sooooooooo upset I didn't say MY BEST FRIEND LAURIE) sent some pictures of her new stamp studio.  I am sure somewhere I have read I am not supposed to 'covet'.  Take a look at these pictures.......She is one very spoiled DIVA :)

Fabulous set up for classes

Look at this for organization and don't forget to keep your feet warm whilst you are organizing :)

I am not sure Laurie has enough card stock ;)

Here are the cute jars I was talking about.  LOVE them :)

Thanks for sharing pictures with us Laurie.  I want to come play !!
